The theme for the assembly, "Walking, running, soaring in hope," comes from Isaiah 40:31: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint" (NIV).
For some, there may be weariness about the work of the General Assembly. Long hours of meetings, discussions about weighty issues, and important business consume those present and engage the energies of the whole church. In answer, Isaiah promises a renewal for the church and strength for the weary, revealed by elastic displays of soaring, running, and walking. This promise is our hope.
Nothing we do in accomplishing this will be as important as prayer. Paul says to "rejoice in hope . . . persevere in prayer" (Rom. 12:12). Prayer is the business any time we gather for discernment, and it will be a constant companion of the Assembly. Weeks before the meeting convenes, groups will be organizing the church in prayer. At the Assembly, each meeting will be an invitation for the church to pray together in small groups and large convocations.
There will be plenty of business in need of prayer. The Assembly will be considering several items that allow the church to engage in its continual reformation and change. Exciting new structures and initiatives for growth will discussed. You can follow the assembly at pcusa.org/ga220.
Please help us make this an Assembly that brings hope by joining us in making this an assembly of prayer.
