What Is Success For Your Church? I once asked this of an old-school church leader, who promptly spluttered and spat a mouthful of tea back into his cup and saucer. (I'm from England, and people drink a lot of tea over there. That's plenty of opportunity for tea splattering.) If we're honest, though, we can sort of understand that pastor. Asking about church success can make us feel a bit televangelist and slightly unclean. But it's a vital question....http://files.constantcontact.com/74dfabef201/dbc5bd94-ce1d-4797-85ef-ed69b5bef908.png  Alex Absalom of DandelionResourcing.com is a coach, speaker, and writer on the practicalities of transitioning churches into disciple-making cultures – especially through combining missional living with being naturally supernatural. You can connect with Alex in advance of the conference via Twitter (@alexabsalom) and Facebook (dandelionresourcing).

URBAN MISSION CAMP. Government Street Presbyterian Church, located in historic downtown Mobile, Alabama, is currently preparing for our 2017 Urban Mission Camp program. For 25 years, GSPC has welcomed youth and adults throughout the church and provided life-changing experiences during Urban Mission Camps. At GSPC’s Urban Mission Camp, campers will:
·     Bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ through service to urban poor.
·     Learn about urban issues from those they serve and receive testimonies concerning God’s presence in their lives.
·     Reflect on poverty issues in light of Biblical and Reformed understandings of Christian faith.
·     Live together and build a Christian community.
·     Experience the connecting foundation of the Christian community.
·     Grow spiritually through worship and devotion guided by our staff.
Campers will reside at Baytreat, GSPC’s beautiful conference and retreat center, located on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay (enjoy a virtual tour at http://youtu.be/_giuTmej_sU). Campers arrive Saturday afternoon, worship at GSPC on Sunday, work Monday through Thursday at a variety of mission sites, enjoy Thursday afternoon at the beach, and depart Friday following breakfast. The following dates are available for 2017 Urban Mission Camps: July 8-14, July 15-21, July 22-28, July 29-August 4. Urban Mission Camp is designed for high school and college age students; therefore middle school youth group requests will be evaluated on a case by case basis. One adult advisor (at least age 25) must accompany every seven youth participants. The age limit does not include church employees. Although our maximum capacity is 32 participants per week, we encourage smaller groups (at least three or four youth and one advisor) to participate. We will work to combine several smaller groups for a richer experience. The cost of $330 per participant includes six nights lodging, sixteen meals, and a t-shirt. Please see the Urban Mission Camp brochure to learn about saving $50 per participant. Space will be officially reserved for your group only when the deposit of $150 per camper is received. For more information about Urban Mission Camp or Government Street Presbyterian, visit www.gspcmobile.org. Rev. Samford Turner, Phone: (251) 434-9322, E-mail: samford@gspcmobile.org.

CAN YOUR CONGREGATION say yes to these statements?
  • Our church has a clear and concise goal in mind for its communications.
  • Our church maximizes the use of its social media platforms.
  • Our church's website is easy to navigate and tells the congregation's story
If you're not sure about your congregation's responses to any of these statements you may want to schedule a communications workshop in 2017. Communications planning is an intentional process that looks at what each of your church's audiences need to hear from you. Creating a strategic communications plan can be overwhelming, challenging and even frustrating. A sound communications plan is key to conveying your church's message. The daylong communications workshop, conducted by communications professionals on the Presbyterian Mission Agency staff, will provide tips and techniques to better reach your audience. We'll offer insights and guidelines on creating a communications plan and you'll learn proven techniques for enhancing your church's website and for using social media tools like Facebook and Twitter. The workshop also will include the "do's and don’ts of media relations and "pitching" stories to your local media. You'll leave with tips that will make your congregation's communications more effective and help increase your reach. Click here to get more information and to schedule a workshop.
TONY DE LA ROSA, Interim Executive Director of Presbyterian Mission Agency, has been communicating with leaders in the church through a short video digest, "Keeping Faith." Each edition contains three short video stories that you may use in your digital publications. Click here to see the entire series.
7 EASY WAYS to Get Your Congregation Connected: Jesus was a great storyteller. He showed us that sharing a tale or a parable could stir hearts, win people over, inspire the lukewarm, and build up God’s realm on earth. And does the PC(USA) ever have great stories to share! Read more.

Concerning the Dakota Access Pipeline, please pray for justice for the Sioux tribe and for all who have been showing support for them. Thousands of veterans (who have been trained to use total nonviolence in this situation) and other Native Americans from around the country have congregated there to show support for them. Some Presbyterian ministers have been arrested for participating in demonstrations. Please pray for shalom for all.
Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday will be celebrated on January 15th at 4:00 p.m. at Macedonian Baptist Church in Wheeling. All are invited. Details will be given in future Happenings.
