A New Devotion on Cove's Prayer Line - The Best Defense

Below is a new devotion I just left on the Cove Presbyterian Church prayer line. You can find a recording of this devotion on the prayer line (1-304-748-7900) or on the Cove Presbyterian Church Podbean page. You might also want to visit the congregational website (covepresbyterian.org) for more church information.

If you find this meaningful, please consider sending an offering directly to Cove Presbyterian Church, 3404 Main Street, Weirton, West Virginia or through PayPal.

Ephesians 6:10-24

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The Best Defense

Image result for football defenseI know there’s an old saying that goes something like this: the best defense is a good offense. And even though that might be true in some situations, I think only a fool would enter any kind of conflict with no thought of defense. For example, we’re in the middle of the NFL play-offs, and I’d bet my house that every single head coach is working on his defensive strategy for the next game. And this involves looking at the strengths and weaknesses of both his team and the team he’s playing and then coming up with something that will prevent his opponents from doing effectively what they might do best. You see, to win the game, he’s really can’t neglect the defense.

And as this passage from Ephesians reminds us, that’s also true as we live our Christian lives. I mean, we’d be foolish if we didn’t take seriously the strengths of what we’re facing, and in our case, it’s stronger that even Aaron Roger’s on his best day. You see, we’re confronting “the cosmic powers of this present darkness”, “the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places”, and right now I’m talking about the devil himself. This is the one on the other side of the line of scrimmage, but of course, we’re not alone. Not only is God always with us, but he’s given us the tools, the armor to withstand whatever onslaught might be coming. You see, with the help and the support from our Lord God, we’ll be able to stand firm, because when you get right down to it, he provides the best defense possible.
