What's Happening at Cove Presbyterian Church?

Below are the announcements as they appear in the Sunday bulletin.

THE SEASON OF LENT
“Lent is a time for evangelism and for true conversion—a time for growing through repentance, fellowship, prayer, fasting, and concentration upon our baptismal covenant.  We are signs of God's kingdom in this world.  The themes of repentance and preparation for sharing in the death and resurrection of Christ are basic to the whole body of Christians who will renew their baptismal faith during the Easter Season.  Lent is thus not giving up something but rather taking upon ourselves the intention and the receptivity to God's grace so that we may worthily participate in the mystery of God-with-us.” (Handbook of the Christian Year, 1986)  Purple, the color of royal mourning, is used during this time of preparation and penitence.

YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT BEFORE THE SERVICE . . .
the Rev. Rudiger pours water into the baptismal font even though we might not have a baptism on that particular Sunday. Here’s the reason. Since baptism is one of the pillars of our identity as Christians, this is a reminder that we’re united as members of the Body of Christ. It represents a gift given to us by God, one that we can’t earn and don’t deserve. As we move forward as a congregation, it’s important to remember and to celebrate the sacrament that unites us. And since Jesus said that part of making disciples of all nation involves baptizing them, it’s also a reminder of the mission we’ve been given.

IN KEEPING WITH THE SEASON OF LENT,
as we approach Easter, we’ll move through a sermon series entitled “Why: Answering Some of Life's Hard Questions.” During that time, we’ll use the Book of Job to grapple with the following questions:
March 5 – Why do bad things happen to good people?
March 12 – Why don't people understand me?
March 19 – Why don't I understand what's going on?
March 26 – Why is God allowing this to happen?
April 2 – Why doesn’t he make things clear?
If you’ve ever struggled with issues that seem unfair and felt frustrated, this might be an important for you and for someone you might know. You can find topics already covered at The Cove Community blog and on our Cove Podbean page.

“JESUS TIME” IS SPECIAL TIME FOR . . .
all our children and young people. This Sunday School experience offers them the opportunity to learn the Bible story and apply that story to their lives. “Jesus Time” meets at 11:00 a.m. and runs until the end of the Worship Service. If you have children and teens, ask one of the greeters to direct you to the children’s location.

DURING THE SERVICE,
we’ll present Bible to Emily, Abigail, and Hannah Kopras. Remember, if you know any young people who haven’t received a Bible, please let us know.

1307 Chapline St., Wheeling, TGIW services (Thank God It’s Wednesday) are held every Wednesday from 12:05 to 12:30 p.m. For the Wednesdays in Lent, through art, image, and music, we will focus on aspects of Christ’s journey to the cross and how it speaks to our own spiritual journeys unique to each one of us. We will join in the hallway to view the paintings on display then reflect on them throughout our short service. Additional pictures will be added to the walkway each week, with the entire exhibit in place for the Wednesday before Good Friday. Come to view the gallery and join us for our noontime service each Wednesday at 12:05 p.m.

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED . . .
to celebrate the Installation of the Rev. Dr. Franklin E. Lewis as Pastor of Trinity Parish Presbyterian Church, 342 Carolina Ave., Chester, WV, Sunday, March 12, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow.

“THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US.”
(John 1:14) God’s word is not an abstraction, but a living presence with us. One way to celebrate that living presence is to come and see the words of the story of the Passion of Christ come alive in human form at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 110 Maine Blvd., East Liverpool, OH.  The Easter Pageant on the Hillside: Palm Sunday, April 9, at 6:00 p.m. and Holy Saturday, April 15, at 6:00 p.m. For more than thirty-five years now, seventy or more people have portrayed the final days of Jesus life, following Him from the Palm Sunday procession through the Upper Room to the trial, crucifixion, and the resurrection. Over the years it has enriched the spiritual journey of many Christians to see the Passion story recreated and remembered. If the weather is nice you may be seated on chairs in the parking lot (or bring your own chairs). If the weather makes it necessary, you may sit in your vehicles. For more info, call the church office 330-385-3557, M-F 9-Noon.
